Marking the first a-n Assembly to be organised by a collective, the event will hear from a range of collaborative projects from across the UK, focusing on the increasing necessity of artists communities to operate in this way. Since the oil price crash of 2014, Aberdeen has been in the grips of a concerted effort to diversify its economy – and shift its identity – away from the energy sector. This has resulted in the majority of the city’s large-scale cultural venues closing for a period of renovation, including Aberdeen Art Gallery which is currently undergoing a long-delayed expansion project. In place of this institutional presence, grass-roots artist and cultural activity has blossomed, defined by a deeply collaborative community of projects. The Tendency Towards’ programme highlights collective modes of operation as a radical and necessary approach towards energising, narrating and distributing artists’ agency across communities and geographies. During the day, invited collective projects and practitioners from across Scotland and the UK will show us how to cultivate communities with endurance and stability, and a circuits-style activation workshop will keep us on our toes. Centring around a desk-like structure enmeshed in a pod, LOVEAND... is Tendency Towards' first large-scale exhibition commission as a group for the Look Again Festival 2019. The committee have sought to inverse the functionality of office furnishings to create an intimate space in which to contemplate co-working labour realities through the vocabulary of self-improvement. Tendency Towards presents newly commissioned sculptural, text and sound works by Madeleine Hope-Fraser, Jack McCombe and Stephanie Mann jointly investigating the formation and narration of communal architectures. Considering the role artist-led spaces play in forming local cultural identities, A Room For a Handshake envisages exhibition-making as a framework for supporting artist actions. A programme of activations including a weekly guided library, shared meals, artists workshops and advice sessions delivered jointly by Look Again and Tendency Towards will populate the projects’ month long run at Look Again’s new city-centre project space. Madeleine Hope-Fraser, Jack McCombe and Stephanie Mann all investigate materiality, objects, space and thingliness within their practices in multi-disciplinary methods. Covering site-specific installations, sculpture, text, performance and video, their practices are broad and explorative in their approach to exhibitions Creating work collectively, Hope-Fraser and McCombe both studied at Glasgow School of Art, now based jointly in Toronto and Glasgow; Stephanie Mann is based in Edinburgh, currently participating in the inaugural two-year Talbot Rice Residents Programme. We invite creative practitioners, inclusive of visual artists, designers, musicians, coders and collectives, to spend every second Tuesday evening together between 19th February and 19th March to present projects or individual works which they feel are in need of feedback. Hot Take will travel between three sites each evening, which can be your flat, studio, cafe - wherever your practice is currently based. It is free to take part in Hot Take but essential to reserve your space. For this initial trial period we are seeking 9 participants*, and we ask that you can commit to coming to every evening. &nbsp; The sessions are open to collectives or groups, a place on the crits will be treated as one individual. Images by Grant Anderson.Sticky Vectors by Christopher MacInnes creates a garden of contamination that draws on both the languages of networked technologies and microorganic life to envision a possible post-human future state of existence that expands upon the bodily context of the historic Dissection Room.The installation comprises a micro-ecosystem of screens, computer cases, organic and plastic matter spread across the floor, clinging to the fixings of the space. Continually feeding on deep-neural nets that skim streams of information to independently produce strange, collapsed and ever evolving imagery. The garden visualises not only its own state of existence, but sets out to produce a loose narrative on its evolution and history.Sticky Vectors attempts to refigure the notion of contamination as an ecstatic becoming, growing forth from our composted carcasses to create something new and in doing so proposes that progress might not include us.Christopher MacInnes’s practice continually looks to deconstruct video and image media, and the infrastructures and processes that support it. Images by Tendency Towards.Exhibition and&nbsp; flag making workshop Becoming Understood lead by artist Roos Dijkhuizen encouraged participants to reflect on the term ‘becoming’. Collectively the group created a collaborative flag to later be distributed to artist-run organisations across Scotland.&nbsp; Prior to distribution, the outcome of the workshop was celebrated with an exhibition and potluck dinner at the artist-run space No. 8.Roos Dijkhuizen is an artist using print and installation to create curious objects that look at jarring natural states and alternating communities, in nature and in human constructs. Roos uses various materials and processes to bring together possible overlaps and scales of existing and disembodied worlds. Her ways of analysis involve collaboration and collective making, to be present in an exchange and reshaping of perception and the collective action that can occur made via these things.Her interest in the subject of becoming , all possibilities and all people to embody a direction of transformation , can also be described as a becoming which never becomes, a transitive sensation - the flight - becoming-animal , becoming-woman , becoming-molecular , a becoming which is neither evolution or asymptote but a certain turning / turning inward / turning out of it / turning at last. Her feet are talons; her Hands are Unclean was a solo show by Verity Birt comprising new commissions as well as works from her solo show Deformation Attends Her at Blacktower Projects, London. Her feet are talons; her hands are unclean takes its title from an ancient invocation to a chthonic shapeshifting goddess whose transformative bestial identities span across culture and mythology (Hecate, Kali, Lilith, Morrigan, Lamashtu…) The spell or curse invokes the wanton goddess to be bound, tamed and seduced, thus dissolving her power and abating her wrath. In this work, Verity Birt creates an altar-like surface with offerings to this theriomorphic femme, and speaks an invocation to subvert the curse. In the video, zoomorphic artefacts are digitally shifting behind ritualised gestures of shadow animals frequently embodied by women in mythology.Deformation Attends Her is an enquiry into the prehistoric sites and rock art features embedded in Northumberland’s landscape. Birt seeks to summon their potential as places of ritual culture that predate a patriarchal and exploitative relationship with nature. By drawing upon practices that have been historically suppressed and encouraging reciprocal and non-hierarchical relations between bodies and landscape, the artist speculates on what knowledge these sites might transfer if addressed with more intuitive, playful and collective actions.The video work centers on the site-specific dance of artist and choreographer Alys North, guided by the marks and patterns carved into the prehistoric stone which stages her. North’s movements form the foundation for a mapping of the site and are engraved onto the surface of acrylic discs that hang in the space. The discs suggest a visual score - they trace North’s movements and their relationship to the landscape alongside archaeological illustrations of earthworks, cartographic mappings and astrological signs.&nbsp;The sound piece has been developed in collaboration with SHE, a women’s community choir in Newcastle upon Tyne. Through a series of workshops taking place on a carved prehistoric rock channel, Birt worked with the collective to draw upon the energy of the site using vocal improvisation techniques. The work recalls the oral dissemination of women’s history, resonating acoustically and communally through oral traditions. The ceramics in the exhibition embody a tactile recollection of the channel where the sound was recorded. Birt worked at the clay to create fragments of the experience from memory, providing a sculptural counterpart to the acoustic space conjured by the women’s voices. -&gt;
